■Description
The Waseda Business Excelerator (WBX) was launched in 2002 to help non-Japanese high-growth ventures develop successful businesses in Japan, thus promoting global, technology-based entrepreneurship. A generous contribution by Dr. Robert J.Shillman, founder of Cognex Corporation, USA, made it possible for Waseda University to establish the program. Qualifying WBX ventures can tap the expertise of the extensive Waseda network of professors, MBA interns, investors, strategic business partners, analysts, and industry influencers to develop and refine their market entrance strategies. WBX also levels the playing field for these ventures by helping to simplify Japanese funding procedures. During a six-month stay, WBX ventures work with an assigned team of MBA and undergraduate interns to complete two key phases of development: 1) a Japanese market feasibility study that evaluates opportunities and analyzes barriers to entrance; and 2) a business plan including entrance strategy, workforce development, formation of strategic alliances, headquarters location search, and preparation for company establishment. WBX has quickly become a leader among Japanese market entry acceleration partners for non-Japanese ventures seeking to build successful companies in Japan.
